At least twelve people died and nearly 2,800 were injured in Lebanon on Tuesday, September 17, after pagers exploded in several regions of the country early in the afternoon, according to a report released by the Ministry of Health on Wednesday.

Hezbollah, a Lebanese Shiite movement, announced that some of its members equipped with pagers had been injured. According to a source close to Hezbollah quoted by Agence -Presse, a “large number” Members of the pro-Iranian movement were among the victims.

The pagers (pagers in English) are rudimentary communication devices. Very popular in the 1990s, before the advent of the mobile phone, they allow you to receive short alert messages or texts, and in some cases to send them. Until very recently, they were still massively used in British hospitals. Battery-powered, these small devices have a long battery life.
