According to a Spanish study, the solution to piracy lies in a simple solution: offer lower prices accompanied by advertising, and build customer loyalty, rather than increasing the price of their rates every year.

Towards an Effective Fight against Piracy

The fight against piracy has evolved well beyond simple control measures. This is a conflict that has been going on for several years. The closure of historical sites and the blocking of many addresses by Internet service providers make the management of an illegal streaming or downloading platform particularly risky. Even users are not completely protected, and piracy services are redoubling their ingenuity.

However, prohibiting access to these platforms does not constitute a sustainable solution. Piracy is like a hydra with many heads, which keep growing back. The idea is to find a way to motivate users to turn to legal services such as Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, etc. To explore this path, researchers from the Autonomous University of Madrid have studied the behaviors of current subscribers of streaming platforms who occasionally pirate content. Their goal was to find out how to convince its users to subscribe.

The study was conducted among 883 volunteersThe researchers presented a fictional streaming site called Flixio and used four types of messages to assess participants’ intention to subscribe: a cheaper offer with advertising, loyalty discounts, prosocial messages reminding them of the consequences of piracy, and threats.

Encourage to subscribe

According to the results, it turns out that low-cost formulas including advertising broadcasts are quite effective, but it all depends on the consumer’s attitude. Users would probably be more interested if the ads didn’t bother them. But if you are allergic to ads, this solution is not for you.

Another concept to explore is that of loyalty. Why not reward long-time subscribers, instead of increasing the price of their subscriptions every year? Users who are sensitive to this concept are more likely to subscribe to a platform that rewards their loyalty. But you also need to find common ground with the others : “This incentive should not only aim to retain subscribers, but also to reinforce the perceived utility of being loyal users, as rewarding loyalty has a well-documented reinforcing effect on loyal attitudes and behaviors.” explains the report.
