Jeremy Dutcher wins 2024 Polaris Prize

Singer-songwriter Jeremy Dutcher of Tobique First Nation in New Brunswick has been awarded the 2024 Polaris Prize for his album MotewolonuwokThe Montreal-based Wolastoqey tenor and composer thus makes history, winning for the second time this prestigious award which rewards the best Canadian album.

He received this distinction for his first opus Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa in 2018. This is the first time since the Polaris began that the prize has been awarded to a former winner.

The 2024 Polaris Prize was announced at a gala at Massey Hall in Toronto on Tuesday evening.

Singer, composer, ethnomusicologist and activist, Jeremy Dutcher offers a style that combines the songs of his community with neoclassical, jazz and pop influences. His album Motewolonuwok contains songs in Wolastoq and English.

The Polaris comes with a $50,000 grant. This award is awarded by a jury of journalists, broadcasters, bloggers and programmers from across Canada.

Jeremy also received two nominations at the next ADISQ Gala.
