“The Paperboy”: Booed and cheered

Summer 1969: Successful journalist Ward James (Matthew McConaughey) returns to his sleepy hometown – Lately, Florida. There he and his colleague Yardley Acheman (David Oyelowo) want to check whether the mentally unstable alligator hunter and petty criminal Hillary Van Wetter (John Cusack) is innocently on death row. He is accused of killing the local sheriff, but there were suspicious inconsistencies in the case against him. Charlotte Bless (Nicole Kidman) plays an important role in the search for evidence of Hillary’s innocence:

She maintains an intensive pen pal relationship with him and is supposed to turn the resigned death row inmate’s head during a visit so that he stops blocking and instead lends the journalist a hand. However, Charlotte has an even more intense effect on Ward’s younger brother: Jack (Zac Efron) is at Ward and Yardley’s side as a driver and loses his head at the thought of Charlotte…

“The Paperboy” celebrated its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, where the clash of different tones and genre traditions divided opinions: The film was both booed and honored with a 15-minute final applause – like the US industry portal Variety reported.

When watching “The Paperboy,” it is easy to imagine such a tug-of-war of loud reactions: Director Lee Daniels dares a provocative mixture from a reckoning with the US justice system, a feverish, crazy Florida attitude to life, a pompous, lascivious period color, a social drama and a cheeky nod to pulp fiction and exploitation cinema.

Where love drips

This means that Efron spends a considerable part of the film bare-chested or in a fine-rib shirt, while Kidman presents her role in such an overly sexual way that it becomes comical. In addition, the escapades between Charlotte and Jack are only a few minutes away from being brutal insights into the underworld.

“The Paperboy” becomes a film of bodily fluids: Under the Florida sun, people sweat gallons. If blood spurts, it’s a lot. And the anti-allergenic (and jealousy-fighting) effect of urine is tested. In the FILMSTARTS review, “The Paperboy” is aptly described as “neurotic southern fairy tale“, which is as ambiguous as it is calculated and gets out of hand with relish.

“Although a lot goes wrong, the crude thriller still convinces with its high entertainment value,” is the conclusion of the three-star review. A varied double feature would be guaranteed on a movie night with joint Kidman-Efron projects! If, on the other hand, you just want to get down to blood, we have an extremely harsh streaming tip for you – and it’s free too!

Horror grenade now completely uncut & stream for free: This splatter absolutely deserves its FSK-18 rating!
