Austria beats the Netherlands and complicates France’s path

Something quite crazy is looming in this Euro 2024, where the qualifiers for the knockout phase, who have emerged one by one since Sunday evening, are drawing a totally unbalanced final picture. On Monday, France held in check in Dortmund by Poland (1-1) joined Germany, Spain and Portugal, whom it could face in the quarter-final.

Unable to beat a demobilized and already eliminated Poland team, the Blues let slip first place in Group C, which went to Austria, 3-2 winner of the Netherlands in Berlin in a much more inspired match. The Austrians opened the scoring with an own goal from Donyell Malen in the 7th minute. Cody Gakpo equalized at the start of the second half (47th 1-1) but Romano Schmid gave Austria the lead again by heading in a cross from Florian Grillitsch (59th 2-1). Memphis Depay equalized at 2-2 in the 76th minute before Marcel Sabitzer sealed the final score with a strong shot after piercing the Batavian defense (81st 3-2).
