Controversial goal by De Bruyne – the Belgians are back

Published: 22.06.2024, 20:51 Updated 14 hours ago

The Belgians needed just 73 seconds to take the lead. Youri Tielemans’ goal was the third fastest in the history of the European Championship. But as the final phase approaches, the favorites in their second group match against Romania are still in a tight spot. Sometimes the VAR has something to say about the 2-0, but more often it is the Belgians themselves who fail due to their nerves or the opposing goalie.

But they don’t have to mourn the missed chances. Their captain Kevin De Bruyne redeems them in the 80th minute. The goal is controversial because the midfielder first hits the ball and then also hits goalkeeper Florin Nita on the leg. The consequence should have been a foul, but for the first time in this tournament the Belgians are lucky with the decisions of the video referee. Three of their goals had previously been annulled, all three of which were scored by Romelu Lukaku. Against Romania he was just offside. The star striker was once again the unlucky one.

But Belgium is back. After the 2-0 win, all teams in Group E now have three points. An exciting final matchday is in the offing.

The ticker for reading:

The Belgians win 2-0 thanks to goals from Tielemans and De Bruyne and are back on the road. All teams in Group E now have three points. An extremely exciting final matchday is looming. Belgium will then face Ukraine, Romania will face Slovakia. A summary of the match will follow shortly.

That will not be enough to equalize for the Romanians.

Lukaku works tirelessly on his goal as if he were Sisyphus. This time he breaks through on the right and shoots. His attempt is stopped by the Romanian goalie. The Belgian striker is still waiting for his first goal of this European Championship.

That was Romania’s chance to score. Substitute Alibec broke through and flicked the ball past the goalie. But also past the goal.

Of course, the Belgians are no longer happy. Too often in this tournament their celebrations have been ruined by the video referee. But this time the VAR has no objection. The goal counts. It should be the deciding factor.

And then it is the superstar who saves the Belgians. De Bruyne suddenly appears in front of the Romanian goal. And the Manchester City playmaker gets to the ball just before the Romanian goalie and scores to make it 2-0.

Of course, even if they drew, the Belgians would still be in the race to advance. But just one point after this game in which they put in so much effort? That would be a huge setback. The final phase will be a test for the favorites’ nerves.

This game has been up and down so far. Now the teams are taking a short break from the exchange of blows, and my ticking fingers thank me.

The strong Doku and Tielemans, the goalscorer, leave the pitch. Carrasco and Mangala come in for them.

This is how close the Belgian striker was to being offside when he scored.

The Belgian defense is playing with fire in Cologne. It’s not the first time that they’ve let a Romanian escape, and it’s Dennis Man who’s ultimately stopped by goalie Casteels. Man, oh man, oh man – that was close! And now we’ll stop with the joke, we promise!

The Belgians are experiencing an unpleasant déjà vu again. Lukaku was just offside when he scored. It is the striker’s third goal to be subsequently annulled at this European Championship. Without opening the history books: This smells like a record.

And then Tielemans launches Lukaku out of nowhere. And the Belgian star striker takes off with his long legs and coolly finishes the perfect pass to make it 2-0. That is the well-deserved reward for the Belgians.

It’s still 1-0. The only thing that matters is holding on to 1-0. The match offers high-level entertainment. The Belgians have more chances, but they seem vulnerable enough in defence that one can imagine a Romanian equaliser.

The Belgians are looking pretty vehemently for the 2-0. Now it is Lukaku who has the chance again. His shot is no problem for the Romanian goalie.

One of Belgium’s speed dribblers leaves the pitch. Lukébakio is replaced by Trossard.

A kick from the Romanians lands with the opponent. The ball goes through two stations to De Bruyne and he shoots immediately. The Romanian goalie is able to correct his mistake.

The Belgians have woken up. Doku is playing his opponents dizzy on the left, Lukaku misses his cross. Then it is De Bruyne who goes for the shot. His attempt flies wide of the goal.

The Belgians got off to a flying start in the first half. Now they are sleepwalking across the pitch at the start of the second period. Mihăilă escapes them and shoots. But the Romanian winger still hasn’t had a good shot. Once again he’s just endangering the spectators.

A chance for Romania. Dennis Man – yes, that’s the man’s name – shoots from a distance, and Belgian goalkeeper Casteels lets the ball disappear into his arms.
