“Not again.” Romelu Lukaku was confused on Saturday evening. Once again, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) had provided evidence that the striker with the number 10 on his back had scored a goal from an offside position. It was a shoe tip in the 2-0 win in Cologne against Romania, a few millimeters that tipped the scales in Lukaku’s disadvantage.
At least this decision against Lukaku had no impact on the outcome of the match. That was different last Monday in Frankfurt.
Belgium had unexpectedly lost 1-0 to Slovakia in their first group match – partly because two of Lukaku’s goals were subsequently disallowed. When the equaliser was supposed to have been scored after just under an hour, the video assistant also noticed an offside position, and in the final phase the goal was disallowed because team-mate Loïs Openda had used his hand to assist in the assist.
Will it work against Ukraine?
Three goals scored, three goals disallowed – no one will challenge Lukaku’s record at a European Championship any time soon. The beefy striker, who was loaned from Chelsea to AS Roma last season, must still wait for his 86th goal in the Red Devils’ jersey.
Lukaku’s next opportunity to taste his first regular success will not be long in coming. On Wednesday, Belgium will face Ukraine in the last group match in Stuttgart.
