Three police officers involved in the death of Cédric Chouviat in January 2020 will be tried for manslaughter. The delivery man repeated that he was suffocating during his arrest, during which he was pinned to the ground. For the victim's family, the qualification of manslaughter is additional violence.
Cédric Chouviat had shouted “I'm suffocating” nine times before dying in hospital two days after his police check. For their part, the three police officers indicted are requesting a dismissal of the charges. Christian Chouviat, guest on RTL on Friday January 3, recalled that his son died “by suffocation” and by “crushing of the larynx”.
“We hope that the judgment will bear fruit,” indicated the father of Cédric Chouviat who ruled that the qualification of police violence which did not result in death was a “scandal”. “In my eyes, Michaël Perez only had one intention, which was to follow through with his act,” he argued.
“He strangled him to the end, he never stopped even though Cédric said 'I'm suffocating' nine times”, added the victim's father, who does not understand the request for dismissal from the police.
The qualification of manslaughter is a “scandal” according to Christian Chouviat, who regretted that the police officer Laura Jouve, who had been involved, was no longer prosecuted. “Not all police officers in France are criminals […] but there are some vermin,” he assured. “We demand that justice be done for all police violence”concluded the father of Cédric Chouviat.
