At a recent meeting on the development of the semiconductor industry, Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Chi Dung said that Vietnam currently has 174 foreign direct investment (FDI) projects in this area, with a total capital of nearly 11.6 billion USD
The minister also revealed that he had met several times with representatives of many large technology companies such as Google, Qualcomm, Meta, AlChip, Qorvo…, and that the majority “had plans to move supply chains to Vietnam”develop R&D centers (research and development), investments in Vietnam.
According to Nguyen Chi Dung, the signing of a strategic cooperation agreement between NVIDIA and Vietnam to develop an R&D center for artificial intelligence (AI) and AI data center has attracted special attention within the global technology community.
This agreement will act as a catalyst, attracting other tech giants and spurring the creation of a vibrant ecosystem around artificial intelligence and semiconductors.
Associate Professor and Doctor Nguyên Thuong Lang highlights the important role of free trade agreements in helping global manufacturing companies take advantage of Vietnam as an efficient base for their production and exports to the United States and Europe.
According to him, in the coming times, FDI flows in the semiconductor industry to Vietnam will show many optimistic signs.
Eliminate logistical bottlenecks
However, it is necessary to quickly eliminate the logistical bottlenecks which constitute a major obstacle to Vietnam’s competitiveness in this sector. It is therefore urgent to implement effective solutions to eliminate them. The development of the semiconductor industry in Vietnam is a national project, which requires the synergy of the entire country, many sectors and localities…, and not just the technology sector alone, underlined Nguêen Thuong Lang.
Previously, at the Vietnam 2024 Logistics Conference, Dr. Yap Kwong Weng, Managing Director of Vietnam SuperPort, noted that ASEAN is positioning itself as a new global production center, attracting more and more foreign direct investment (FDI).
Vietnam’s strategic geographic location, with its proximity to China and its long coastline, makes it an ideal logistics hub in Southeast Asia, promoting trade and the development of port activities. However, the development of its logistics sector is hampered by still insufficient infrastructure.
The lack of modern logistics centers and poor connectivity between different modes of transport constitute major obstacles. To remedy this situation, there is an urgent need to establish multimodal transport corridors.
