Vienna/Berlin (MH) – The Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Concert will be conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin (49) for the first time in 2026. The orchestra announced this on Wednesday. “With his election, we want to achieve our goal of working more closely with the young generation of conductors,” said Philharmonic board member Daniel Froschauer.

The Canadian Nézet-Séguin made his debut with the Vienna Philharmonic in 2010 at the Mozart Week in Salzburg. Since then he has regularly conducted joint concerts in Vienna and Salzburg as well as on tours. In 2023 he directed the Summer Night Concert. At the New Year’s Concert next year, Nézet-Séguin will succeed Riccardo Muti, who conducted it for the seventh time this year.
Nézet-Séguin has been artistic director and principal conductor of the Orchester Métropolitain de Montréal since 2000. In 2012 he was appointed music director of the Philadelphia Orchestra and took on the same position at the Metropolitan Opera New York in 2018.
