The tone is tense between the president-elect of the United States and the Canadian government. Canada does not “will never back down from threats” of Donald Trump, declared on X Mélanie Joly, the Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Tuesday January 7, 2025. A little earlier, the elected president of the United States threatened to use “economic strength” against his neighbor. Resigning Prime Minister Justin Trudeau added Tuesday, still on X, that “never, ever, will Canada be part of the United States”.
These statements from the Canadian government follow comments from Donald Trump on his desire to “merge” the United States with Canada. On Monday, the president-elect once again estimated on his social network that it was in the country’s interest to become the “51st State” of the United States, after the resignation of Justin Trudeau. On Tuesday, he ruled out sending the army, but threatened to use “economic strength” against Canada, during a press conference.
“It would really be something to get rid of this artificially drawn line”he said about the American-Canadian border, before detailing his grievances against the big neighbor to the North, accused of profiting cheaply from very expensive military protection from the United States. “President-elect Trump’s comments demonstrate a complete misunderstanding of what makes Canada strong”reacted on X Mélanie Joly.
