As the new year approaches, the French are preparing to receive bank interest. According to The Parisianinterest amounts for 2024 are expected to reach a record level.

Every year, on the night of December 31 to January 1, banks pay interest on savings accounts. Whether you have a Livret A, a Livret d'Épargne Populaire (LEP), a Livret Jeune or even a Housing Savings Plan (PEL), almost all French people will receive this money.

According to the Caisse des Dépôts, the addition of interest payments from the population amounts to nearly 20 billion euros for the Livrets A, LEP and LDDS (Sustainable and Solidarity Development Booklet). For example, a Livret A comprising 7,000 euros and an interest rate of 3% will bring in almost two hundred euros at the end of the year.

Most attractive investments

According to The Parisianthis time of year is also an opportunity to compare savings investments in order to get the best interest. The most interesting investment remains the LEP, reserved for the most modest incomes, with a rate of 4%. Then come the Livret A, LDDS and Livret Jeune at 3%.

As for the PEL (Housing Savings Plan), its rate of remuneration is fixed upon opening the account and cannot change subsequently. In 2024, it is 2%. Next year it will increase to 1.75% due to slowing inflation. As for the CEL (Home Savings Account), its rate has been 2% gross since February 1, 2023. But be careful, because unlike Livrets A, LEP and LDDS, the interest rates on PEL and CEL are gross and therefore subject to tax.
