With these new features, PlayStation Portal becomes truly portable

PlayStation Portal is getting a dream feature just before the holidays. The remote player for the PS5 is currently used by millions of people who prefer to access their PS5 on a smaller screen, both for reasons of comfort and use of the main screen. Although it’s not really a console, many people plan to take a vacation with PlayStation Portal.

That’s good, Sony adds the possibility of connect to public Wi-Fi networks, which was absolutely not possible before. Updating the device therefore allows it to accept networks that require you to open a connection page, asking you to create an account or enter credentials. This applies to hotels, cafes or even airport and train station Wi-Fi. Hiromi Wakai, Vice President of Product Management, explains in a press release:

To connect to these public Wi-Fi networks, PS Portal will display a QR code that you must scan with your smartphone or tablet. Once the code is scanned, you can use your mobile device’s web browser to complete the various additional validation steps to connect your PS Portal. Remember that PS Portal requires a Wi-Fi connection of at least 5 Mbps. For the best experience, we recommend a broadband connection of at least 15 Mbps.”

Some other new features

It is worth noting that this feature is not yet compatible with absolutely all public Wi-Fi comprehensively. Some networks may not be supported, either because of their quality or because the connection method is too complex. Sony still recommends using PlayStation Portal at home, where Wi-Fi quality can be controlled and outages are normally less likely. This is also a security issue.

Support for public Wi-Fi isn’t the only new addition to PlayStation Portal. The update adds a visual feedback when using the touchpad of the screen. The movement of your fingers will be temporarily marked so you can track your actions more precisely. Finally, the PlayStation Portal displays something new that may please those who are anxious. The machine now shows the remaining percentage of its battery. No more guesswork with the simple symbol and its three filling bars, you can precisely control the autonomy of your device.
