Solidaris interviewed some 1,800 people, including 529 parents of children with disabilities or serious illnesses, in order to find out the needs of families regarding the adaptation of new school schedules in French-speaking Belgium.

The study reveals that seven out of ten parents have registered at least one child for an organized activity during the summer of 2023, but this rate decreases to six out of ten parents (61%) for those living alone and to half of the respondents among less well-off families.

Parents spend on average 160 euros per child, but this varies from 193 euros for advantaged social groups to 106 euros on the other side of the spectrum. Single parents spend on average 15% less, reports Solidaris.

The situation is more complicated for families with children with disabilities. Just over a third of these children participated in activities last summer. Parents who have not registered their child for an activity mainly point to the lack of adaptation, the insufficient offer and the cost.

“The results underline the importance of maintaining and improving access to leisure activities for all children, regardless of their socio-economic situation or disability”, estimates Solidaris, which calls for an adaptation of the leisure offer. leisure activities for families, mainly in terms of cost and quality of supervision.
