Naomi Osaka will have a scan on the injury that forced her to abandon the WTA 250 final in Auckland but remains optimistic about her participation in the Australian Open, the former world number one said on Monday.
Osaka, titled in 2019 and 2021 at Melbourne Park, was reduced to tears on Sunday when an abdominal injury forced her to withdraw while leading Clara Tauson 6-4 in her first WTA final in almost three years. “I’m going to have an MRI today to assess the situation”said the 27-year-old in a brief statement.
“I don’t feel like it’s too serious and I remain very optimistic for AO”. Osaka, who returned to the tour a year ago after a long maternity hiatus, showed signs of the form that saw her win four major titles during her run to the Auckland final . On Monday, she returned to the top 50 of the world rankings. The Australian Open starts on Sunday.
