Three weeks after the European elections which pushed the President of the Republic to dissolve the National Assembly, more than 49.3 million French people were called to the polls again this Sunday for the first round of the legislative elections. According to the Ifop-Fiducial estimate for Le Figaro, it is the National Rally which comes first with 34.2% of the votes (240 – 270 deputies) just ahead of the New Popular Front. The alliance of left parties obtained 29.1% (180 – 200 deputies). The presidential party Renaissance and its allies MoDem and Horizons are credited with 21.5%, in third position (60 – 90 deputies). Next come the Republicans with 10% (30 – 50 deputies). According to the first projections made by the polling institute, no absolute majority would emerge from the polls next Sunday.

Still according to the Ifop-Fiducial study, participation stands at 67%, up 21.5 points compared to 2022 when it reached its lowest level under the Fifth Republic. Two years ago, less than one in two French people (47.5%) went to the polls for the first round of the legislative elections. This is slightly more than two French people in three this year, where a record number of proxies – 2.7 million – were registered by the Ministry of the Interior.

These legislative elections allow the French to designate the 577 deputies of the National Assembly. They are elected for a term of 5 years, except, as in the present case, dissolution of the National Assembly. Unlike senators, these parliamentarians are elected by direct universal suffrage. Each represents one of the 539 constituencies of mainland France. There are also 27 in the regions, departments and overseas communities and 11 for French people living abroad.
