Canada earned a 0-0 draw in Chile on Saturday night, securing second place in Group A and a spot in the quarter-finals of the Copa America.

Jesse March’s men took advantage of a red card from Gabriel Suazo in the 27th minute to move to 11 against 10 for a second consecutive match.

The Canadians applied a lot of pressure on the Chilean defense in the final 10 minutes of play, but they were unable to score. Tani Oluwaseyi thought he had given his team the lead during stoppage time, but his goal was quickly canceled due to offside. Canada fired nine shots at the Chile net, hitting three of its shots.

Quebec goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau, a member of the Portland Timbers, made three saves to record a second consecutive shutout.

After losing its first match 2-0 against Argentina, Canada finished its round robin with a record of 1-1-1, remaining undefeated in its last two matches.

Canada is the first nation since 2001 to reach the playoff round after scoring just one goal in the round robin.

Already practically assured of first place in the group before their last match, the Argentines defeated Peru 2-0 thanks to two goals from Lautaro Martinez.

Lionel Messi was not in uniform due to a right leg injury suffered against Chile last Tuesday. The Argentina star’s health will be assessed daily by team doctors.

The game was played in front of approximately 64,000 fans at Hard Rock Stadium, home of the Miami Dolphins.

The quarter-finals of the Copa America will begin on July 4.
