Twelve years after London 2012, Stan Wawrinka returns to the Olympic stage in Paris. He has just been awarded a wild card and selected for the Olympics.

No one has forgotten that in 2008, Stan Wawrinka won the gold medal at the Beijing Olympic Games in doubles with Roger Federer. In 2012, he was flag bearer for the Swiss delegation at the London Games.

Now aged 39, the Vaudois will participate in Paris in his third Olympic Games, having had to withdraw from Rio and Tokyo due to injuries. Although the Lausanne resident, currently 98th in the world, did not manage to qualify directly, he obtained one of the two wild cards reserved for Olympic champions and Grand Slam winners.

Swiss Olympic granted Swiss Tennis’ request and selected Stan Wawrinka, as well as Viktorija Golubic.

The 31-year-old from Zurich also narrowly missed out on direct qualification for Paris 2024 via the WTA rankings, where she is currently in 69th position. However, she was able to join the group of 56 players in the table, given that a maximum of four players are authorized per nation and that some higher ranked athletes withdrew. This will be Golubic’s second participation in the Games, after Tokyo in 2021 where she won the silver medal in doubles with Belinda Bencic.

Golf: with two Romandes

Meanwhile, six Swiss (four women and two men) will be on the starting line for the Olympic road races: at the request of Swiss Cycling, Swiss Olympic has selected Marlen Reusser, Elise Chabbey, Noemi Rüegg and Linda Zanetti in the women’s race as well as Stefan Küng and Stefan Bissegger among the men. Marlen Reusser will be the only Swiss woman to participate not only in the road race, but also in the time trial. In her favorite discipline, the 32-year-old Bernese, silver medalist in Tokyo in 2021, is among the best in the world.

Furthermore, two Swiss women’s teams will compete in the beach volleyball competition which will be held at the foot of the Eiffel Tower. At the request of Swiss Volley, Swiss Olympic selected the duos Nina Brunner/Tanja Hüberli and Esmée Böbner/Zoé Vergé-Dépré.

Finally, in golf, two female athletes will represent the Swiss Olympic Team at the Olympic tournament: Albane Valenzuela and Morgane Métraux, both born in 1997, were selected at the request of Swiss Golf. While Geneva’s Albane Valenzuela will participate in the Games for the third time, it will be a first for Lausanne’s Morgane Métraux.

Four riders held

In horse racing, finally, four Swiss were selected for show jumping after last week’s selections for eventing and dressage. Martin Fuchs will be present with “Leone JEI”, Steve Guerdat with “Dynamix de Belheme” and Pius Schwizer with “Vancouver de Lanlore”. Switzerland will thus be able to count on solid Olympic and international experience, since all three already feature well in the world rankings.

Edouard Schmitz, who has an impressive record at just 24 years old, will also be on the trip as a reserve with “Gamin van ´t’Naastveldhof”.
