Not everyone took the road to the polls in Valais this Sunday. Of the 122 municipalities in the canton, 26 have not had elections. More than one in five. The figure is high. And in reality, it is even more so, because in a dozen villages, such as Collonges, Vex, Albinen or Varen, citizens had to go to the polling station to complete their municipal council, the tacitly elected candidates not being not enough. The observation is striking. Especially since it is located in Valais, an eminently political canton.

From Haut-Valais to French-speaking Valais, from the mountains to the plains, the municipalities which did not vote come from the entire cantonal territory. However, one similarity brings them together: they are small municipalities whose population rarely exceeds 1000 individuals. If for some like Bister and its 41 inhabitants or Zwischbergen and its 71 souls, it may be understandable that the election is tacit, for others it raises questions. How can we explain this lack of interest in public affairs?
