“It’s cruel”: concerns still strong two days before the entry into force of the IVAC reform

The reform of Compensation for Victims of Criminal Acts (IVAC) will come into force on Tuesday and with it, a new three-year deadline for certain financial aid.

These new provisions introduced in 2021 are a source of anxiety for certain victims of crime who still do not consider themselves capable of re-entering the labor market.

This is particularly the case of Sabrian Hovington, who experienced psychological, physical and sexual violence with her family and her boyfriend.

“I remember the last day I lived with him,” she says. He locked me out on our patio, he barred the doors. It was cold. It was winter.

“So I had to get in through the window and when I got back in, he physically attacked me. He kicked and punched me,” she adds.

The 28-year-old woman says she is starting to feel better, but still does not feel ready to return to work.

“There are people who really depend on IVAC and I am one of them,” she said. They have no other help than that. To cut there, I find it cruel because there should be no limit on the restoration of these things.

For its part, the office of the Minister of Justice, Simon Jolin-Barrette, indicates in a statement sent to TVA Nouvelles that there “will be no stoppage of IVAC services”.

“The victims who are currently receiving compensation for temporary total incapacity have all been contacted […] in order to be informed that they could qualify for the new financial assistance provided for in the Act,” we mention.

“If they meet the criteria provided for in the Law, they will therefore see their compensation continue beyond October 13, 2024,” we add.
