Nearly 10,000 customers without power as storm hits NL

Nearly 10,000 Newfoundland homes were without power around 9:15 a.m. Sunday morning as strong winds, rain and snow battered the province.

Environment Canada is forecasting severe weather conditions until Monday morning and has issued weather alerts for most of Newfoundland and parts of Labrador.

According to Veronica Sullivana meteorologist from Environment Canada Gander10 mm of rain had fallen at the Saint John International Airport around 6:30 a.m. Sunday morning.

We expect rain all day for the Avalon Peninsula, with accumulations of 10-20mm, which will continue into the eveningshe said.

Watch out for flying debris

Western Newfoundland is expected to receive about 10 centimeters of snow, accompanied by winds of 80 kilometers per hour, leading to poor driving conditions and low visibility on the roads.

Visibility is also expected to be reduced in the Port aux Basques area, where up to 15 centimeters of snow and winds of 100 kilometers per hour are forecast.

In the Saint-Jean region, the weather agency is forecasting rainfall of 20 to 40 millimeters which could lead to localized flooding in low-lying areas.

In eastern and northeastern Newfoundland, Environment Canada is forecasting gusts of 90 to 120 kilometers per hour which, according to the weather agency, could damage roof shingles and windows.

Gusts will continue to pose risks, meteorologist says Veronica Sullivan.
