The Multiuser quay becomes for the first time the host of the first ship of the year, thus marking the history of the Port of Sept-Îles. Another unprecedented event, three ships crossed the port limits on the morning of January 1, 2025.
At 7:06 a.m. on New Year’s Day, the ship Frontier Jasmine, which carries high purity iron concentrate from the company Minerai de Fer Québec (MFQ), became the very first ship to drop anchor in the Bay of Sept- Islands for 2025.
A three-way race
A real competition took place as the Siboney M ship of the IOC Mining Company, which followed closely with its arrival at 8:00 a.m. Subsequently, Le Mildred from the Tacora company then checked in at 11:36 a.m. Three ships eligible for this distinction, an unprecedented event for January 1st at the Port of Sept-Îles.
This moment also has a special meaning for MFQ, which is the main user of the Multiuser platform. In accordance with tradition, the Port will hand over its prestigious cane with its stylized pommel bringing together aluminum and iron ore, as tradition dictates, to the captain of the Frontier Jasmine when she arrives at the dock for her loading scheduled between the 8th and on January 11.
Towards an exceptional year
This activity aims to mark the arrival of the first boat to anchor in the waters of the Port, while highlighting the importance of port activities within the community. Only vessels arriving from abroad and departing for a destination outside the country are eligible.
The presence of nearly 15 vessels in the bay that morning illustrates the already active launch of operations for 2025. The Port of Sept-Îles is therefore preparing for a busy year, with promising tonnage and activity prospects, strengthening thus its status as the leading ore port in North America and its recent international recognition as “Best port specialized in dry bulk 2024”.
