The Montreal administration is asking citizens to collaborate on better waste management so that the city is cleaner.

I am a Montrealer, and this winter and even this fall, waste left in the streets has become part of the landscape. Enough to dull the feeling of magic that usually accompanies the arrival of snow in the metropolis.

The melting of the snow and the holiday festivities in town added to it.

Better in Quebec than in Montreal

I have lived in Montreal for 10 years, and I have never found the city as dirty as in recent months.

Sectors like the Hochelaga-Maisonneuve district now collect waste only every week, and it shows!

I have seen them, this waste that remains piled up on the side of the streets. It sometimes even becomes difficult to walk among this waste spread by animals on the sidewalk.

Quebec City collects waste at the same frequency, and having gone there often this year, I did not have the same impression of uncleanliness. On the contrary.

Could it be because people in Quebec are better at managing their waste?

Count on the efforts of citizens

If we don’t want Montreal to be jokingly recognized as a dump, it needs to regain a certain cleanliness. But to get there, we cannot rely only on the goodwill of citizens.

Regardless of the collection frequency, I believe that the City of Montreal must implement more effective additional solutions so that poorly managed waste is removed from the streets as quickly as possible, without exception.

When it becomes clear that citizens have to step over waste daily in their neighborhood, I consider that the City is not doing its job.
