SENEGAL-ENVIRONNEMENT-COMPETITIO’N / “Setal suñu gox” challenge: the Cité Lamy of Thiès wins first place – Senegalese press agency

Thiès, Jan 3 (APS) – La Cité Lamy, a district of Thiès (west), won first place in the “Setal suñu gox” challenge, a national competition aimed at promoting cleanliness across the country, noted the APS.

The first prize went to Cité Lamy, in the commune of Thiès Est, the second, to the Diokoul Ndiourène district, in the commune of Rufisque and the third prize, to the village of Taïba Niassène, in the commune of Nioro du Rip in the commune of Kaolack region, revealed the Minister of Urban Planning, Territorial Communities and Regional Planning, Bala Moussa Fofana.

On Friday at Cité Lamy, he chaired the awards ceremony for the winners of the “Setal suñu gox” challenge.

According to him, his department had set up a monitoring committee, made up of “agents very involved in the administration”, which selected the winners, following a deliberation last Monday.

“This day aims, among other things, to promote a clean Senegal, through the mobilization of all the active forces of the nation, in favor of taking charge of the living environment,” said Bala Moussa Fofana.

He explains that his ministry launched the “Setal suñu gox” challenge, to distinguish the cleanest neighborhoods and the best initiatives, in collaboration with employers.

Lamy City owes its title to an initiative launched by a young person which transformed a street of 18 houses, named Rue Fucus, named after the plants along this alley.

In addition to the cleanliness of the street, all the houses were repainted the same color. The initiative has caught on in the neighborhood.

This award ceremony for the winners of the “Setal suñu rew” challenge was organized as a prelude to the seventh edition of the national day of citizen mobilization, initiated by the President of the Republic Bassirou Diomaye Faye.

Mr. Fofana specifies that “far from giving privileges to a locality”, the spirit of this challenge aims to “impulse a community dynamic, for the cleanliness of our public spaces, for a strong involvement of local actors”.

“My services launched a hashtag, it went viral on social networks,” he said.

According to him, a platform open for this purpose made it possible to register “hundreds of people registered for the challenge, from Dakar to Kédougou and from Saint-Louis to Sédhiou”.

He notes that initiatives led by neighborhoods, villages and grassroots community organizations have been recorded in other regions of the country.

“I would like to thank these valiant leaders of innovative initiatives, for the interest they have in the cleanliness of our cities, our neighborhoods, our villages and our public spaces,” noted Balla Moussa Fofana.

“They understood that the management of our common spaces remains a priority for shaping the image of our cities, in accordance with the objectives of the systemic transformation agenda,” maintained Mr. Fofana.
