The French Ministers of the Armed Forces, Sébastien Lecornu, and of Foreign Affairs, Jean-Noël Barrot, will travel to Lebanon from Monday to Wednesday, to meet the French soldiers of UNIFIL on the occasion of the New Year, AFP learned Friday with the Ministry of the Armed Forces.
Monday in Beirut, Sébastien Lecornu is due to meet with General Joseph Aoun, chief of staff of the Lebanese Armed Forces, who is to lead the deployment of soldiers in the south of the country following the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah.

General Aoun is cited as a possible candidate for the post of President of the Republic, vacant for more than two years. On December 31, he will meet with General Edgar Lawandos, commander of the southern Litani sector and who represents Lebanon within the ceasefire monitoring committee.
This committee, which brings together Lebanon, Israel, the United States, France and the UN force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), is responsible for monitoring the application of the ceasefire and all potential violations. This came into force on November 27, after two months of open war between Israel and the pro-Iranian Islamist movement. Sébastien Lecornu and Jean-Noël Barrot will then go to the UNIFIL camp in Deir Kifa to spend New Year's Eve with some of the 700 French soldiers deployed within UNIFIL.
