Legislative elections 2024: the RN’s surge is confirmed in Charente

In Charente, the first round of the legislative elections has delivered a first verdict. And as expected, it is very favorable to the National Rally and its ally LR version Ciotti. The three far-right candidates are qualified for the second round, two came out on top.

This is the 3rd district (Confolens and Ruffec) who delivered their result first. Between Confolens and Ruffec, the outgoing RN MP Caroline Colombier takes the lead with nearly 43% of the votes, ahead of Virginie Lebraud (PS), 25.88%. Coming third with 24.52%, Modem Gwenhaël François very quickly announced the withdrawal of her candidacy in the second round, “to block the RN”. However, he was in a position to maintain himself (he had exceeded the 12.5% mark for those registered).

In the 2nd district (Cognac), the results are final, and they give the advantage to the LR candidate version Ciotti (within the framework of the agreement with the RN). Barthélémy Martin gathered 38.91% of the votes, against 27.39% in Sandra Marsaud, the outgoing Renaissance MP. Third and also qualified for the 2nd round, Insoumise Carol Ball gathers 20.34% of the votes for the New Left Front. If Carole Ballu has not yet wanted to express herself on the second round, all the left-wing parties are calling for the withdrawal of their candidate who came third, when the RN can impose itself. Sandra Marsaud can also hope to benefit from a transfer of votes from Didier Jobit (historical LR).

In the 1st constituencythe first round ends once again in a close second. The outgoing Inosoumis deputy Rene Pilate takes the lead with 32.80% of the votes, against 30.30% for the former Horizons MP for the constituency, Thomas Mesnier, who finished with only 23 votes ahead of Marie Latus of the RN (30.26%). All three are in position to hold on to the second round.
