After Samuel Umtiti’s header, Jan Vertonghen’s knee. The French team eliminated Belgium again this Monday afternoon, this time in the round of 16 of the Euro football championship, with a score of 1-0. This dream match, a rematch of the 2018 World Cup, sent Médiamétrie into a frenzy. TF 1 was in fact largely at the top of the ratings between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. An average of 10.99 million viewers watched this match, commentated by Grégoire Margotton and Bixente Lizarazu.

The market share for the entire audience aged four and over is 56.5%. It climbs to 66.6% for housewives aged over 50 (FRDA-50). This first qualifying match for the Blues in this Euro 2024, records the second best audience of the year 2024, still held by the first match of Kylian Mbappé’s teammates in the Euro against Austria (11.25 million viewers and 47.6% market share).

Audiences lower than last Euro

A slight disappointment for the broadcasters. Hit by a major political sequence, the French still do not seem to have their heads completely in this Euro. The audiences recorded match after match since the start of the competition are significantly lower than those of the previous edition. In 2021, 16.34 million football fans followed the round of 16 France Switzerland, which ended on penalties with a defeat for Didier Deschamps’ men.

The other audience to note is that of the Portugal-Slovenia match, broadcast in prime time on M6. The victory of Cristiano Ronaldo and his friends, after extra time and a penalty shootout, future opponents of the Blues, captivated 4.57 million football fans. The match led by Xavier Domergue and Christophe Dugarry brought together 25.2% of the public (and 30.8% of FRDA-50).

“Daily” ahead of TF 1

M6 is logically the leader at that time, ahead of France 2 and the series “L’Art du crime” with Éléonore Bernheim and Nicolas Gob. The episode in rerun attracted 2.94 million people, or 14.2% of the overall audience but only 5.3% of FRDA-50, which proves that the series mainly attracted an older audience. TF 1 follows with the rerun of the French comedy “Mission Pays basque”. Led by Élodie Fontan, Florent Peyre and Daniel Prévost, the movie night brought together 2.13 million people, or 10.8% of the market share (and 15.5% of FRDA-50). Next came “Un village presque parfait” on France 3 (7.8%) and the return of “Nus et Culottés” on France 5 (4.7%).

It should be noted that, something extremely rare, “Quotidien” beat TF 1 with its election night debrief. 2.22 million fans of Yann Barthès watched the last part of the TMC talk show between 9:00 p.m. and 9:35 p.m., or 10.2% of the audience and 20.7% of FRDA-50. Without editing, the daily show, which only started at 7:45 p.m., just after the final whistle of the Blues’ round of 16, attracted 1.62 million people (7.3% overall).
