“On Sunday, when the results of the first round came out, we toasted with water and we were happy!”

“My boyfriend, Alex, and I said to ourselves that if the RN [Rassemblement national] won this Sunday [7 juillet] so “yallah!”, we would go celebrate it with the two kids, my mother and my aunt in my favorite restaurant: the Royal Wok. And not just any restaurant: the one in Guéret, in Creuse. It’s an all-you-can-eat buffet, and I never leave until I feel like throwing up! For 20 euros, you get everything included, even the drinks, and that’s not common in all-you-can-eat buffets. You help yourself to as much as you want. You can have 10, 20 liters of rosé, it’s free. And then, after the restaurant: head to Lilo Trésor, the crazy games room for kids – each to their own paradise, eh!

DOROTHÉE RICHARD

Except that we’re not going anywhere. Because the Royal is an hour and a half away by car, and we live in Ussel, in Corrèze. So, to get there, you need diesel, and we don’t have the money anymore. And the restaurant too, you have to be able to afford it, and well, we can’t. Sunday, when the results of the first round came out, we toasted with water and we were happy!

That’s our biggest problem, money. Like everyone else, you know. Fed up with always counting. And yet, we work. Alex, he works at the Leclerc drive-through, he’s up at 5 a.m. He earns 1,400 euros net with bonuses and everything. I’ve worked: receptionist, Domino’s Pizza, KFC, Leclerc. And since February, I’ve been a chihuahua breeder. A puppy is worth between 650 and 900 euros. And yet, on the 5th of the month, we have no more money. Something’s wrong, you know. It’s survival. The struggle. Always. We live in social housing, we go to the social grocery store for food aid… So, when [Jordan] Bardella says he’s going to lower the amount of fuel tax and even eliminate it on basic necessities, well yes, it will change our lives, and we vote for it. And Macron? What did he do to lower prices? Nothing. He didn’t even lift a finger. He doesn’t give a damn about the little people. Bardella, he’s not racist. He’s a nationalist. The French for France, that’s completely logical. Those who want to work, who are foreigners, they have every right to be there. I’m not racist, I don’t care.

“We are very clear about this, we will never be rich”

Alex, I met him during the lockdown. I was bored and I went on the dating site Adopte un mec. The first time we saw each other, I jumped on him. We ended up at a friend’s house and we made love in his toilet. And we never left each other’s side again. He had been single for ten years. He just didn’t have time for love. His parents had a porcelain factory that made really funny figurines like Master Yoda or Betty Boop. What did he work? Sixty hours, seventy hours, eighty hours a week? And then finally closed down. The factory didn’t go bankrupt, but they weren’t making any money. The social security contributions were too high, the customers weren’t paying him, the foreign competition was too tough. So what was the point of killing yourself at work?
