After A German Requiem by Brahms on June 15, Radio Classique takes you back to the Basilica of Saint-Denis for another masterpiece of sacred music: the Requiem by Mozart.

Performed as part of the Saint-Denis Festival on June 20, it was performed by the Les Eléments choir, soprano Axelle Fanyo, mezzo-soprano Adèle Charvet, tenor Sahy Ratia, bass-baritone Guilhem Worms and Le Cercle de l’Harmonie conducted by Jérémie Roher.

In the first part you will be able to hear the Rhapsody for viola, male choir and orchestra by Brahms sung by Marie-Nicole Lemieux. Composed in 1869 on a poem by Goethe, the Rhapsody for viola is a wedding gift to Julie Schumann, the third daughter of Robert and Clara, with whom Brahms was in love.

Brahms’ Rhapsody as an expression of his grief

The work, marked by this emotional disappointment, was created by Pauline Viardot, and Clara Schumann had these words to describe it: “It’s been a long time since I have been so touched by such profound pain set to music. I consider this Rhapsody as the expression of her sorrow.” This evening will be presented by Laure Mézan.
