At the end of May 2023, police officers allegedly mistreated a man in a cell at the Gare police station. Due to accusations of alleged police violence, four police officers were placed in pre-trial detention in July 2023. A little over a year later, the investigation is completed, according to information from the Luxembourg Word.

It is not yet clear whether legal proceedings will take place. The prosecution can now decide to initiate proceedings against the defendants. In this case, a chamber of judges will decide whether there is sufficient evidence for a trial. Some time could therefore still pass before the possible opening of a trial.

Beatings and cover-ups

On the night of the ING marathon, on 20 May 2023, a police officer allegedly repeatedly hit a drunk man in a cell in the presence of two other police officers. Subsequently, a fourth police officer, a superior, allegedly tried to cover up the facts. According to information from the Wort, this man allegedly, at one point, pressured a young police officer to falsify an intervention report. This young man, who would not have participated in the violence, reported the case later.

Retaliation is considered a possible motive for the act. From the end of March 2022, according to information from our colleagues, the alleged main author sent an email to some of his colleagues in which he openly declared war on the future alleged victim. Previously, the man allegedly threatened the official during an intervention.

Meanwhile, the four accused police officers have been released on bail after spending more than two months in pre-trial detention. They are presumed innocent until a final conviction is handed down.

On 1 November, the central station unit was officially disbanded. The service continues to exist, however. Security in the station area is no longer provided by a relatively small police unit of around 30 officers, but by the capital’s central police station in Bonnevoie-Nord.
