A woman faces an aggravated assault charge after an infant was admitted to Yellowknife hospital with “worrying injuries.”

The incident was first reported on April 24, according to NWT RCMP. The Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority then informed police that an injured infant had been admitted to hospital.

The RCMP said the toddler had “suspicious injuries that could be life-threatening.”

The child was taken to an Edmonton hospital for treatment.

The police have opened an investigation in partnership with the Edmonton Child and Adolescent Protection Centre.

During the investigation, authorities learned that the accused had also assaulted a young child, although the injuries were less serious, according to the RCMP.

On June 17, police arrested and charged a 41-year-old woman with aggravated assault and battery.

She appeared before a justice of the peace before being released. She is scheduled to appear in territorial court in Yellowknife at a later date.

RCMP are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact the Yellowknife detachment.
