Seeing the stands of the Chartres swimming pool half as full as the day before, this Tuesday, a day of rest for Léon Marchand at the French championships, we say to ourselves that French swimming really only has eyes for its phenomenon. We can hardly blame the public as the appearances of the young expatriate in the United States are rare here, but we border on an error of judgment. For two reasons.
One, Maxime Grousset and Florent Manaudou achieved the Olympic minimums on Tuesday in the 100m freestyle in the morning heats, suggesting good things to come. So it was a shame to deprive yourself of it. Two, Léon Marchand is in training at the French championships. His time and sensations in the 400m medley, which he considered disappointing on Monday despite the national distance title and the Olympic minimums achieved without trembling, are a good example of this. Before the start of the week, he only had one reference dating from April in San Antonio, and a time of 4’11”21.
