More affordable housing planned in the Canardière sector

After several citizen consultations, the City of Quebec opts to increase the share of social, community and affordable housing in its Vision for the development of the Canardière neighborhoods.

In its preliminary vision of the neighborhood presented last fall, the City anticipated 12% social, community and affordable housing. Its final version unveiled Monday now provides for 20%.

Last November, the City unveiled its preliminary vision for the sector.

The East Coast Citizen Table is delighted with this new target.

[ Avec l’ancien objectif ] we maintained the percentage of social housing in the sector, therefore we maintained the crisis situationspecifies Marie-Hélène Deshaies, the president of the citizen group.

It now remains to see the tools to achieve this objective, whether at the provincial or municipal level.she adds.

The City, for its part, reiterates its commitment to deliver 80,000 housing units of all types by 2040.

Garage Canardière

The City reaffirms its desire to convert the Canardière garage into a multifunctional center with a social vocation without indicating the possible concepts. A collective approach to clarify them will be launched possibly.

However, it still closes the door to a self-managed center that the East Coast Citizen Table would like to see.

Mme Deshaies assures that she will continue to work so that this project meets the needs of the community.

Citizens must be involved in the future of this building.says the president of the Citizen Table.

But the person responsible for major urban projects on the executive committee, Maude Mercier Larouche, warns: Whatever project is chosen, the requalification will take around ten years due to the need to relocate current activities, decontaminate the land and renovate the building.
