With the national team, it has already happened at the King Baudouin stadium, in the complicated moments of the selection at the beginning of the 2000s and sometimes also with the golden generation. But it was very rare. In a major tournament, in my memory, this is a first. The proximity of the border, and therefore the large Belgian contingent in the stands, is undoubtedly part of the explanation for the echo being so important.

Euro 2024: the Red Devils disappoint and will find France in the round of 16 (0-0)!

Disappointment, above all, explains this burst of anger which materialized in the players being sent back to the locker room under whistles. The scene was rare. As Vertonghen and De Bruyne went to greet their supporters, they were jeered at, to the point that De Bruyne asked everyone to turn around, causing incomprehension from certain players, and even anger from Tielemans.

The first whistles on the last corners

Domenico Tedesco, as he does after every match, gathered his players in the middle of the field, always under the whistles, to do his debriefing. The debriefing of a match that the Devils did not win, leaving the impression that they had not done everything to win, precisely. The first whistles sounded from the stands when the Belgians played the corners to keep the result, rather than to win the match.

The Red Devils under the magnifying glass: De Bruyne the only one inspired, Faes redeems himself after the rest, Casteels infallible

Vertonghen had gone to speak with De Bruyne before the antepenultimate corner of the match for the Belgians, and the idea was to gain time. It happened twice again and it raised questions, in the stands where the supporters made themselves heard. Shyly at first, more expressively at the end. It’s a landmark episode as the Devils prepare for a heated round of 16 against France.

The federation, moreover, had sent a press release during the supporters’ bronca to announce that the sale of tickets for the match against France would be launched this Thursday at noon… More than twenty minutes after the final whistle, while the substitutes were training, the last supporters remaining in the stadium applauded them.
