The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) caught on June 5 one of the nine most wanted criminals in Quebec who had been on the run for almost two years. The individual in question faces pimping charges – including against a minor – and authorities are still looking for other potential victims.
The suspect was one of the individuals pinned on the fugitives website in the sights of several provincial police forces. There are now eight criminals still at large; a photo as well as a short description for each of them allows us to see the extent of the crimes with which they are accused.
The escapee, who was arrested by the SQ, was also listed on the Bolo program, which exposes the 25 most wanted fugitives across Canada.
What you need to know: Omar Abbas Abukar, 31, was arrested on June 5 in a commercial building in Ottawa. The police managed to find him thanks to new information obtained the same day by the provincial police force, according to the Journal de Montréal.
The suspect had been wanted by the SQ’s Integrated Anti-Pimping Squad since 2022, after violating the conditions of his release imposed as part of a criminal trial started in 2021.
Here are the charges that were filed against him between 2019 and 2022:
- Procuring a minor;
- Benefit derived from the provision of sexual services to a person under 18 years of age;
- Trafficking of persons under 18;
- Advertising of sexual services;
- Breach of release order.
What’s coming: Abukar appeared on June 5 at the Gatineau courthouse and he should be back today, June 6, in court for his release hearing.
This individual would have caused several victims in Quebec and Ontario when he was released in 2021, according to police services.
