Place Versailles, the first indoor shopping center to open in Montreal, will continue to offer a commercial offering, even if the site will also gradually accommodate housing and offices.

“The commercial vocation of our site will remain paramount and will continue to play a central role in our development. We are determined to maintain and strengthen the commercial offer to satisfy our customers and partners,” underlined the owners of the place in a press release on Monday.

Doubt was therefore finally lifted regarding the future of Place Versailles, after many expressed concern about the possible demolition of the shopping center to make way for housing.

“What we understand is that there are several shopping centers which are now considering adding offers to their facilities, for example facilities for offices or residential,” reacted Michel Rochette, president of the Council Canadian retail trade, Quebec, in interview with LCN.

“It’s a transformation of the sector that is taking place,” he said.

The redevelopment project includes the construction of 5,200 housing units, but also the reservation of part of the 17 hectare land for a primary school.

The borough of Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, where Place Versailles is located, must vote Monday evening on a resolution which would ask the Montreal municipal council to modify the urban plan and to hold public consultations with the Consultation Office Public of Montreal (OCPM).

Work is not expected to begin for two or three years, according to mall officials.
