Legislative elections 2024dossier

In the small village of Curan, the elections did not disrupt the celebrations of this village of 300 inhabitants. On the program: pétanque, bal musette and paella.

How far away the ballot boxes seem when the first notes of a polka appear which sends the whole assembly onto the dance floor. At the Curan village hall (Aveyron), people have been dancing since the beginning of the afternoon to the sound of the accordion. It is the tradition to close the three days of celebration in this village of 300 inhabitants. So much so that the polling station was exceptionally moved to a small room in the town hall, at the bottom of the village. This Sunday, participation exceeds 80% in Curan. “Maybe it’s because of the party, asks a municipal councilor. Since this morning, we’ve only been talking about that!”

“We’ll probably look at the results when we get home at midnight!” says Geneviève, who came with five friends. When we dance, we don’t talk politics!” However, barely returning from the counting, the municipal councilors share the results. The village placed its outgoing deputy, the Macronist Jean-François Rousset, in the lead, at 49%. He is ahead of the National Rally candidate, Pierre-Antoine Fèvre, at 33%, and the New Popular Front candidate, Richard Bouigue, at 14%. “It’s no surprise, we had no other choice, comment two friends, in their early sixties, at the bar in the village hall. They took us for fools by sending us two parachutes: the one from the RN lives in Switzerland, and the one from the left in Paris! We weren’t going to vote for them!”

In the European elections, the village of Curan had placed Jean Lassalle in the lead, one vote behind Jordan Bardella. “For the legislativethe bonus goes to the local candidate and we forget the extremes,” analyzes the mayor, Jean-Louis Grimal. “Here, we always elect local guys,” supports Solange. The first results for the entire third constituency of Aveyron do not prove him right, however. The RN candidate comes out on top. Mehdi is the only one to pull out his phone when the first notifications arrive, at 8 p.m. “Our name is Ahouari, and understand that we have no plans to pack our bags.”, slips his mother. The orchestra will return to the stage. It’s better to avoid angry topics.
