The Edmonton Oilers clearly no longer trust goaltender Jack Campbell who was placed on waivers so that his contract could be bought out.

The former Toronto Maple Leafs player has not played a game in the National Hockey League (NHL) since November 4. He was then sent to the American League with the Bakersfield Condors, the Alberta team’s farm club.

He signed a five-year, $25 million contract with the Oilers in July 2022. With this buyout, Edmonton will be penalized for the next six seasons, until 2029-2030. Campbell will have an impact on payroll of $1.1 million next year, $2.3 million in 2025-2026, $2.6 million in 2026-2027, then $1.5 million from 2027 to 2030.

In 41 games with the Oilers, Campbell posted a 22-13-4 record with a .886 save percentage. His best season came in 2020-21 with the Maple Leafs, where he won 17 games in 22 games and had a 2.15 goals-against average.

Jets no longer want Schmidt

In Winnipeg, the Jets have decided to place defenseman Nate Schmidt on waivers to potentially terminate his contract.

He has one season remaining on his six-year, $5.95 million annual contract.

The 32-year-old left-hander collected 14 points, including two goals, in 63 games last year. He previously played for the Washington Capitals and Vegas Golden Knights.

Boqvist suffers the same fate

Columbus Blue Jackets guard Adam Boqvist has been placed on waivers in an effort to buy out the final year of his contract.

The 23-year-old was due to earn $2.6 million in 2024-25.

Selected by the Chicago Blackhawks with the eighth overall pick in the 2018 draft, the Swede has 209 games of experience in the NHL.

The Jackets acquired him in the trade that sent Seth Jones to the Illinois club in July 2021.

Last season, Boqvist had one goal and nine assists for 10 points in 35 games.
