Reading has just under 3,700 inhabitants. But this small town in Gers cultivates a special place among photography lovers. To the point that its festival, present since 1990, can be considered as a small Rencontres d’Arles.

Lectoure’s photographic summer 2024 will begin on July 20 and will offer to admire the works of 15 artistes In seven places emblematic of the city, including two new ones for at 35e editing.

Inside and outside

Among the places in question, there is of course the house of Saint-Louis, the former chaplaincy which has hosted since 2010 the Center for Art and Photography. But also the Cherry Orchard, perched on the tip of the southern city walls. His name is already quite an art. We owe it to a playwright passing through Lectoure who deposited earth from Chekhov’s garden in this place, on which cherry trees were planted…

There is also the grain marketalmost two centuries old and a school transformed into an associative and cultural space. The Montmorency alleysbelow the former castle of the Counts of Armagnac will also be lined with photographs, such as Northern Boulevard for the first time. And for the first time too, the Corhaut tower, the only one that has survived in the medieval fortified enclosure. In these last two places, the exhibitions will be free.

Titled ” Our land “, this new edition is in fact an invitation to explore different points of view of relationships between our daily lives and planet Earth.

A place apart…

Created in 1987, the Arrêt sur images association first organized an exhibition each summer, then, from 1990, a festival: L’été photographe de Lectoure. The Lectoure Center for Art and Photography is the only art center dedicated to photography in the Occitanie region.

It was recognized in 1991 by the Ministry of Culture as one of the seven art centers dedicated to photography in France and obtained the CACIN label in 2020 (Contemporary Art Center of National Interest).

Throughout the year, it organizes monographic and collective exhibitions, both inside and outside the walls, artist residencies as well as the Lectoure Photographic Summer.

Since 2018, the façade of the art center has been adorned with an installation by photographer Arno Brignon, who was hosted in 2017 as a creative resident in Lectoure. The portraits, taken with a camera, represent Lectourois who collaborated with the artist during his residency: shopkeepers, artists, volunteers, etc.

Throughout the summer there will be guided tours by artistsstories or “drink in hand”, workshops… But also meetings, screenings and even a picnic.

The Lectoure Photographic Summer 2024. From July 20 to September 29, 2024 in seven emblematic places in the city. Open every day. Prices: 6 euros. Free for minors and Lectourois among others. The entire program and practical information are here.
