Cock-a-doodle Doo ! The French genre film “Sous la Seine” directed by Xavier Gens for Netflix, which features a shark, is a huge success. And this goes well beyond the French borders (like all the path traveled by Lilith, the shark in the film), the hit is global. Also, we can wonder if “Sous la Seine” will have a sequel? Please note the rest of this article contains revelations about the ending of the film.

The question of what happens next is legitimate in the sense that the ending is relatively open. Indeed, at the end of “Under the Seine”, the Parisian river has largely overflowed its bed and is infested with sharks. While the two main characters, played by Nassim Lyes and Bérénice Bejo, are, of course, still alive. We can therefore very well imagine a sequel, for these characters, or for this species of shark which has mutated, reproduces at full speed, and now lives in fresh water in the city. An ending which is also reminiscent, a little, of that of “Crawl”, a film by Frenchman Alexandre Aja, where, in Florida, after a hurricane followed by a flood, alligators invaded the streets.

“A sequel or an ending with a capital F”

Especially since it is not uncommon, especially in the genre, that, when a film is successful, it becomes a franchise and is then equipped with one or more sequels, prequels or spin-offs in all kinds. Thus, the 7th “Scream” film is in preparation, the “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” franchise is in 9 films (the most recent of which was released on Netflix in 2022), “Saw” in 10 feature films and “Halloween” seems to have stopped at the 13th opus.

In addition, on Netflix too, it is not uncommon for after a success, the platform to order a sequel, whether it is a film or a series. Thus, on the platform, the action film “Tyler Rake” released in 2020, was entitled to a sequel. On the French side, “Balle perdu” has already had the right to a sequel and a third film has been ordered. Finally, Netflix has just announced a film to conclude the “Peaky Blinders” series.

In terms of figures, just 24 hours after its release, “Sous la Seine” had not only taken the lead in the most watched content in France, but also in 84 other countries around the world. Questioned by “Var-Matin”, about this open ending and the possibility of a sequel, director Xavier Gens indicated: “A sequel or an ending with a capital F. For me, there may then be other sharks in other major cities around the world. We’ll see if that’s the case or not!
