Extreme heat: what to do at home to stay cool this summer

Finally, summer is in full swing ! After a rather gloomy and rainy spring, the sun has been setting in for a few days in the four corners of France, and the mercury has begun its summer rise… until reaching scorching values! However, as soon as it is over 30°C outside, the house tends to heat up irremediably. To stay cool this summer, you must therefore adapt it:

  • We change our decor, by putting away the warm textiles and winter materials
  • On ventilate at nightwhen temperatures are cooler
  • We keep a stock of ice cubes in the freezerand we put them away bottles of water in the fridge
  • If we have a clim‘, it’s time to activate it to gain a few degrees – but not continuously!
  • When it’s very hot, we keep shutters and curtains closed during the day
  • To refresh a room, you can also hang out our wet laundry

The essential equipment to protect yourself from the heat at home, however, remains the faithful fan. But it is necessary choose your model carefully to ensure a cool summer while avoiding damaging your decor!

Heat stroke: how to choose your fan?

To find the device that suits you, you must examine several criteria :

  1. Power and efficiency : this is generally expressed in watts (W), which defines its capacity to move air. Freestanding models generally have a power of around 45W, and some air mixers can go up to more than 400W. Keep in mind that the larger the room, the more power and/or diameter will be needed to cool it properly.
  2. Speed levels : some fans have up to 20, and others are satisfied with a minimum of 3. It’s up to you to see what type of precision you want!
  3. Design and size : the design of a fan should not be neglected, because it is often an integral part of your decor – for better or for worse. Opt for a refined model, which aligns well with the style of your interior.
  4. Lconnectivity and additional functions : mood lighting, diffuser or humidifier function, connected system for remote management and programming… The more high-tech options your fan has, the more comfortable it will be – and the more its price is likely to rise.
  5. Safety and maintenance : a fan must have protected blades! Some models are also more complicated than others to maintain (number of spare parts, ease of access, materials, etc.).
  6. The sound level : a fan that whirs loudly all night is not ideal! Fortunately, models are getting quieter and quieter. Don’t hesitate to test them in store to get a real idea of their noise.

The pricefinally, is often the criterion of choice for a fan: there are mini-models at equally mini prices (10€), and luxurious devices at several thousand euros. Between the two, one can easily find a good fan, efficient and aesthetic, around €100.
