A person shoots at a playground in Detroit: at least 9 injured

An individual shot randomly on Saturday in a playground in the US state of Michigan (north), injuring at least nine people, including a child, the local sheriff announced. A suspect was ‘surrounded’ in the area.

The shootings took place in Rochester Hills, a suburb of the city of Detroit. ‘The individual parked, got out of his vehicle, approached the playground, opened fire. He reloaded, opened fire, took off,’ the Oakland County sheriff said.

“At this point, it looks very much like a random act,” he added, stressing that the shooter “is not related to the victims.”

Pistol found in situ

The shooting left between nine and ten injured, including an eight-year-old child, the sheriff said. A Glock pistol and several empty magazines were found on site.

‘We have an individual, who we believe to be a suspect, surrounded in the area,’ the sheriff added. Police response teams and armored vehicles were deployed to the scene.

With more guns than people, the United States of America has the highest gun death rate of any developed country. Shootings are a recurring scourge that successive governments have so far been powerless to stem, with many Americans remaining very attached to their guns.
