After the logical elimination of the valiant Georgia against Spain, we spoke with Georges Mikautadze, the former Seraing striker. He kept smiling, aware that his country had won the hearts of many, and talked about this Monday’s match.

Georges Mikautadze (23 years old) will have been one of the revelations of this tournament, at least for those who had not already seen him stack up the goals in Seraing and Metz. The modest scorer for a relegated side from Ligue 1 will have scored 3 goals in this Euro, and been poison for all defenses.

However, he was unable to do anything against Spain, despite some interesting phases. “We tried to do what we could to the best team in the Euro. The step was too high for us but we come out with our heads held high. This round of 16 was already historic for Georgia,” Georges Mikautadze put into perspective after the match.

Mikautadze will support France this Monday

Georgia even opened the scoring to everyone’s amazement, and Spain’s equalizing goal seemed controversial. “We can see that Morata is blocking our goalkeeper’s view. Not sure that if it was another country, the same decision would have been taken,” admits the Franco-Georgian striker.

But pride will remain enormous and Mikautadze will be one of the heroes of his country. “It’s magnificent, we will all return as heroes, that’s for sure. It’s also a great opportunity to show myself, indeed, but I’m not thinking about a transfer yet, I’m going on vacation now,” smiles Mikautadze.

The former RFC Seraing striker then agreed to comment on Belgium-France this Monday. “A particular match? Oh, I don’t know, I was born in France, I’m Georgian and French,” he says. “But I will follow this match carefully, yes. It will not be easy for France because as we have seen, the big nations are struggling in this Euro.”

Of course, the FC Metz player has chosen his side for this match. “I will be behind the French team. Good luck to Belgium, may the best man win,” he concludes with a smile.
