Mathieu Klein, Mayor of Nancy: “The number one issue is to ensure that the extreme right does not come to power”

Mathieu Klein, the mayor of Nancy and president of Greater Nancy, was the guest of France Bleu Sud Lorraine at 7:45 am, to react to the results of the first round of the early legislative elections. In Meurthe-et-Moselle, the National Rally is present in the second round in all constituencies and is in a position to win in three of them.

Is the bet of the union of the left lost? No, answers Mathieu Klein: “no bet is lost for the moment because the number one issue is to ensure that the far right does not come to power next Sunday. We have not managed to stop the progression of the extreme right, it is not for this reason that the diagnosis of the dangerousness of the RN for the Republic is modified.“. Mathieu Klein calls on the candidates who came in third place to withdraw throughout France and in particular in the first constituency of Meurthe-et-Moselle where Philippe Guillemard, outgoing Renaissance deputy came third, behind the left and the RN.

Is there still any point in calling for a blockade of the National Rally when turnout is high and the RN is achieving record scores? Yes, according to Mathieu Klein: “It is through this renunciation that populist, authoritarian regimes prosper throughout the world. There comes a certain point where we say to ourselves “what if we ultimately don’t let them do it?”. I remind you that when the extreme right comes to power, it clings to it by all means, it attacks immigrants, foreigners, only favors the most fortunate […] We don’t have to give up fighting the far right“. Mathieu Klein calls for making a choice of values and society.

According to Mathieu Klein, there is still an alternative to a National Rally majority: “time is short but let’s make this difficult, dangerous situation a glimmer of hope. Many French people expect us to live up to this hope and show that there is no inevitability to the victory of the extreme right.“.
