THE THREE CAPITAL SINS OF THE ISLAMIC UMMAH

THE THREE CAPITAL SINS OF THE ISLAMIC UMMAH
THE THREE CAPITAL SINS OF THE ISLAMIC UMMAH

Hospitals bombed, refugee camps attacked, buildings pulverized and Gaza disfigured…, the IDF sets no limits in its supposed desire to destroy Hamas. Can Palestine, a member of the Organization of the Islamic Conference that recently met in Banjul, count on the Umma? Obviously not, for at least 3 reasons, in the opinion of Imam Ahmadou Makhtar Kanté, writer-speaker who gives a detailed analysis of this geopolitical situation in the Middle East.

Since Israel launched its bloody offensive on Gaza in response to the equally spectacular Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023, diplomacy does not seem to be able to stop the Israeli Prime Minister, determined to bring his war to its conclusion. The UN and certain Western countries are maneuvering without success.

In this ongoing tragedy, much could well have been expected from the Islamic Ummah, in this case from the diplomacy of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) which held its last summit in Banjul in The Gambia.

But it is clear that this organization seems inactive and amorphous despite all its potential. For Imam Ahmadou Makhtar Kanté, the weakness or non-existence of OIC diplomacy is due to three main fractures.

Firstly, the fracture of nationalisms which emerge and are at odds with the original philosophy of the organization. Indeed, Prince Mouhammad Ben Salman of Saudi Arabia wants to restore Arab honor, Erdogan, the Turkish president, is preoccupied by the desire to assert Turkey’s power on the international scene and Iran whose ambitions are clear wants to play an important geopolitical role in international relations, while competing for leadership with Saudi Arabia.

Then, the religious divide between Shiites (Iran) and Sunnis (Saudi Arabia) puts the two countries in a kind of competition and tension that could undermine the organization’s room for maneuver in making decisions in the interest of all. .

Finally, domestic problems undermine certain members of the organization so that the priority cannot be anywhere other than at home: the case of Syria, Sudan, Egypt, etc. are quite illustrative from this point of view. In view of these 3 fractures that the Islamic Umma is going through, if there should be a solution to the Israeli-Palestinian crisis, it would probably not come from the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), according to our guest.
