Belgium apologizes after a controversial video with Onana on Mbappé

The Belgian Football Federation apologized this Saturday after the controversial video with Amadou Onana on Kylian Mbappé. Alongside a Belgian comedian, the midfielder sang that he was going to tackle the French striker on the shin.

The match is already underway before D-Day. France will face Belgium in the round of 16 of the Euro this Monday at 6 p.m. The hostilities were launched after the publication on social networks of a video which quickly became controversial. In the extract, we can see Belgian midfielder Amadou Onana alongside Pablo Andres, a Belgian comedian. The latter asks him “Who will tackle Mbappé in the shin?”, the footballer replies “It’s Amadou Onana”.

This sequence provoked strong reactions. Faced with the outcry, the Belgian Football Federation backpedaled: it decided to delete the video and apologized. “A video was posted yesterday on social networks, in which Amadou Onana talks about tackling Mbappé on the shin. The Federation has been working with Pablo Andres for several years now. His videos have always been humorous. The one published on our networks was also humorous. It was not well understood and we decided to delete the video. We apologize if people may have been offended”, explained the Belgian Federation this Saturday, just before Johan Bakayoko’s press conference.

Electric reunion

This will be the third time in six years that France will face Belgium in the final phase of an international competition. With 75 confrontations, the Red Devils are the opponent against whom France has played the most in its history. In the semi-final of the World Cup in 2018, the Blues blocked the road to Belgium by winning 1-0 thanks to a winning goal from Samuel Umtiti. Three years later, France did the same thing to the Belgians by beating them 3-2, in the semi-final of the Nations League in October 2021 thanks to goals from Karim Benzema, Antoine Griezmann and Théo Hernandez.
