“Spinners” (MyCanal)

A teenager, a driver for a Cape Town gang, discovers spinning, a motorsport that could offer him a new start… A South African gangster series that stands out thanks to its charismatic hero and his friends who are kings of the wheel.

“The Durrells: an English family in Corfu”, season 1 (Arte.tv)

To escape a precarious life, a widow and her children leave England for the island of Corfu. They lead a pleasantly eccentric existence there. This British comedy has only one ambition: to pleasantly occupy your summer evenings. Contract fulfilled.

“SupraCell”, saison 1 (Netflix)

Created by a London rapper, this series gives powers to suburban residents, all of Afro-descendants and not very interested in a vigilante position. The first episodes, which look like a soap opera, are intriguing, but leave us wanting more.

“For Marnie”, miniseries (France.tv)

Faced with the unthinkable, a mother and father are torn apart over the decision to make for their disabled daughter in a coma. This British fiction summons, with courageous intelligence, all the complexity of a cruel ethical debate.

“The Land of Women” (Apple TV+)

A bourgeois woman flees New York with her mother and daughter to the family village near Barcelona. Awaiting them there: a band of winegrowers, a dark farmer and joyful twists and turns, for a friendly soap.

“Slip” (OCS, rediffusion)

Orchestrating a meeting between fantasy and romantic comedy was not easy. Zoe Lister-Jones writing, directing and on camera in the role of Mae comes through with flying colors. She creates a delightful drama.

“My Lady Jane” (Prime Video)

And if… ? Maximizing this fundamentally dramaturgical question is the bias of Gemma Burgess, the creator of My Lady Janean adaptation of the eponymous bestseller. As in the novels, she invents a story from History. And if King Edward VI had not died, what would have happened in the kingdom of England?
At the heart of the episodes, Lady Jane Gray (Emily Bader) who escapes the dire fate she experienced in reality. Teenage crisis, fantasies and feminism sprinkled with fantasy (ah the naked alpha male in the barn who transforms into a horse…), that’s a lot. This alternative fiction would have deserved much more than a lazy treatment between afternoon soap and surprising bestiary… — M.L.
