In the 10th constituency of the North, the Minister of the Interior comes out on top ahead of RN candidate Bastien Verbrugghe. Barring a huge surprise in the second round, he will regain his seat as MP.

He’s playing for big. In his stronghold of Tourcoing, Gérald Darmanin was delighted, in a tweet posted at 9 p.m., to arrive “LEAD OF THE VOTES” in the 10th constituency of the North. Perhaps in the lead, but not by much. According to final results, the Minister of the Interior received 36% of the votes cast, compared to 34.31% for the RN candidate, Bastien Verbrugghe. The candidate of the New Popular Front, Leslie Mortreux, came in third with 24.83% of the vote. For the second round, Darmanin “calls on all voters to mobilize […] so that, in the end, the values of the North prevail: respect, humanity and the Republic.”

In any case, it is enough to give a breath of fresh air to the man who, without being directly in charge of the municipality of Tourcoing, is often addressed as “Mr. Mayor”: in the European elections, Jordan Bardella’s list came out on top by a wide margin (35.5% against 14.8% for the majority list led by Valérie Hayer) in this constituency that Darmanin won in 2012 before “entrust” to one of his close friends, Vincent Ledoux.

Barring a huge surprise on Sunday July 7, the minister can therefore prepare for the rest of his political career. The one who, according to Releasewho has been pleading for several weeks with Emmanuel Macron for a dissolution of the National Assembly in the event of a major defeat in the European elections, should play an important role once the hemicycle is formed. “We could have been ambiguous in the majority. We cannot be if we unfortunately go into oppositionhe explained during the last week of the campaign to Release. To appear as the alternative, we must be clear.”

This local re-legitimization should help him prepare for 2027, a deadline whose objective he has not abandoned. While he thought he would leave Beauvau after the Olympic Games, he should – barring any surprises and institutional blockages – pack his bags a few weeks earlier than planned. And begin his work of reconstituting a classic right with his former LR comrades. A big score on July 7 will help him argue that his local recipes can be applied at the national level to convince voters to leave the RN ballot out of the ballot box during the next elections.

As soon as they are published by the Ministry of the Interior in the evening, find all the results by constituency of the first round of the 2024 legislative elections on the Libération website.
