What does Fernanda Torres’ victory mean in the Oscar nomination race?

Well, the equation is complicated. Without a doubt, this award helps Brazilians a lot. The Golden Globes, even if they have declined in recent years, seem to have regained their place as an important space of visibility for films and professionals.

It is true that the Golden Globes have not been the main barometer of the Oscars in the acting categories for several years now. While the awards divide categories into drama and comedy/musical, the Golden Globes nominate more than twice as many nominees as the Hollywood Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. While the Oscar has five nominees for best actress, the Golden Globe has 12, split between genders.

But there’s no denying that winning helps. The vote for the Oscar, among the members of the Academy, begins next Wednesday (8), even at a time when the result of the Golden Globes is burning.

On the same day, the 8th, the nominees for the SAG Awards will be announced, an award given by the Actors Union, considered the main barometer of the Oscars. While Fernanda’s nomination is still uncertain at the moment, her presence on the SAG list would most likely cement the Brazilian among the main bets for the Oscar.

If winning the Golden Globes is a reason to celebrate, last week the list of BAFTA finalists worried Brazilians. The Brazilian was not one of the 10 actresses preselected in the main category of female actor of the year. Amy Adams (“Canina”), Cynthia Erivo (“Wicked”), Demi Moore (“The Substance”), Karla Sofía Gascón (“Emilia Pérez”), Kate Winslet (“Lee”), Marianne Jean-Baptiste (“Hard Truths”), Marisa Abela (“Back To Black”), Mikey Madison (“Anora”), Nicole Kidman (“Babygirl”) and Saoirse Ronan (“The Outrun”) remain on the BAFTA shortlist.

Although not as powerful a barometer as the SAG, the BAFTAs are generally a better indicator than the Golden Globes, since many of their members are also members of the American Academy. As for the Golden Globes voters, there are 340 journalists, including 25 Brazilians.

It’s also important to remember that while awards serve as indicators of one another, nothing is guaranteed during an awards season. In 2022, for example, Penélope Cruz competed for the Oscar for best actress for “Parallel Mothers”, by Pedro Almodóvar, even without receiving nominations from the Golden Globes, SAG and BAFTA. Coincidentally, Penélope was nominated for a film distributed internationally by Sony Classics, who are also responsible for the “I’m still here” campaign.
