OTTAWA | The Canadian’s threshold hope at the World Hockey Championship, Rasmus Bergqvist, will leave Ottawa without a medal.
Sweden lost 3-2 in a shootout in the bronze medal match.
Eduard Sale scored the winning goal in the 14th round of shootout.
This is the third medal in a row for the Czech Republic at the World Juniors, after silver in 2023 in Halifax and bronze last year in Sweden. For their part, the Swedes finished just off the podium for the second time in three years.
Good tournament
Used for the majority of the competition to the left of captain and prospect of the Detroit Red Wings Axel Sandin Pellikka, the Habs’ seventh-round pick finished the competition with a more than honest production of a goal and two mentions of help in seven parts.
Without being spectacular, he carried out his role as stabilizer alongside the dynamic Sandin Pellikka with efficiency.
The latter also finished the tournament with a total of 10 points which, before the final match, gave him first place in tournament points, tied with the Czech Jakub Stancl.
Public enemy no. 1 booed again
Clearly, Ottawa hockey fans are resentful and they have not forgotten the reaction of forward Petr Sikora when he was hit by Canada’s Cole Beaudoin in the quarter-finals.
Remember that Beaudoin was chased for five minutes and expelled from the game after kneeing Sikora, who remained lying on the ground, visibly in pain.
The little no. 17, a sixth-round pick of the Washington Capitals in 2024, however returned to the game afterwards, raising the ire of Canadian fans, who loudly booed him every time he touched the puck.
And it continued! On Saturday, in the semi-final, he was given the same treatment, just like on Sunday during the bronze medal match.
